It's been a long, long time... [Mar. 13th, 2012|08:50 pm]
[I feel |contemplativecontemplative]

Yeah, it's been a while since I've posted here on LJ. I think I'll start writing here more often, especially as I have a great deal of stuff on my mind lately. Not sure if I'll decided to cross post to facebook, though I think I'll link this post to da book.

It's been a while since I've posted here. Again. I'm going to remind myself to post more frequently, I promise.

(no subject) [Jan. 28th, 2009|11:02 pm]
The fact that Gitmo and other prisons exist has a large reason for the uptick in recruiting by al Quada and other terrorist groups.

Many of the people who were dragged to Gitmo and much later released became terrorists because they were pi$$3d off about their treatment, the torture, and the false imprisonment. They tell their stories to others, and that incites rage against us. So what are we to do?

There is no easy answer. I suggest that first, we admit that we as a country made a mistake, make amends with the rest of the world, and proceed to govern ourselves and our country by the rule of law instead of by the will of a few misguided people.

And on another topic, over the last 8 years, anyone who said that they wanted Dubya to "fail" at anything would have been soundly attacked and pretty much run out of town on a rail for being "unAmerican". Heck, the people who merely pointed out problems with the Bush Doctrine and its actual failures were treated in that manner. However, if someone blatantly states that he wants Obama to fail, the same angry mob wants to brush it aside and/or claim that he was well within his free speech rights. Typical conservative hypocrites.

And the sad part is that I genuinely want a strong opposition party, and it bothers me that the current incarnation of the Republican Party is not it.

Stuff [Jan. 7th, 2009|12:00 pm]
So I'm leaving my current job in order to take a position that will pay me 30% more. That's a good thing and a great challenge.

I've finally gotten around to reading Raymond Chandler after years of reading science fiction that was inspired by him.

White People Shouldn't be Allowed to Vote [Oct. 28th, 2008|05:37 pm]
http://www.philly.com/inquirer/opinion/20081026_White_people_shouldn_t_be_allowed_to_vote.html

I got this link from a message board, and the OP took it seriously. Clearly, it's satire with a shock value title.

Believe it or not, he runs a conservative website when he's not on the board in question.

Yep. Only the "Liberal Media" and "Race Baiters" will say that racism exists... [Oct. 28th, 2008|09:12 am]
There's this story about a couple of Neo Nazis planning a killing spree against Black people:
http://www.ajc.com/news/content/news/stories/2008/10/27/plot_to_kill_obama.html?cxntlid=homepage_tab_newstab

And there are the comments made by readers on ajc.com editorial pages throughout this election. The comments by the readers are more disturbing because they do not represent the opinions of someone out there on the fringes, like the skins who plan a killing spree. Rather, they represent the comments of people that you see each and every day, whether it's at the office, in traffic, or at a restaurant when you're out to dinner with your family or friends. In otherwords, their version of racism--the often subtle use of codewords, etc--is the real vision of America today. Many of these people may not consider themselves to be racist, and in fact, many of them are certainly NOT racist. However, some of their statements and beliefs may in fact be or have their roots in racism or in our racist society.

Several months ago I posted on a message board that this election will bring out both the best and the worst of America. In the last few weeks, I've seen both. I've gone through predominantly white middle and upper middle class neighborhoods that are lined with Obama/Biden signs. I've seen posts on-line from residents of the Atlanta Metro area that have been explicitly racist when discussing this campaign. I've talked to people of several different races and ethnic backgrounds who want nothing more than for people to be honest with each other and to get along.

I've talked to people who are self-proclaimed far right wingers who, while they won't vote for Obama, say that they respect him and his position while disagreeing with his point of view. And they did this without launching into random tirades and attacks about "socialism" or other nonsense. We talked about the problems within our government at this point and why someone who is extremely conservative is pissed off (and rightfully so) at the current incarnation of the Republican party. I was able to express how I was pissed off with the DNC for about five years earlier this decade because of how they fucked up my party and its policies, and only now are they starting to go back to what they should be. So these were good things.

But make no mistake, change is coming, and some people can't handle change very well. I suspect--no, I'm quite afraid--that these guys whom they busted are the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what may occur within the coming weeks and months after Barack Obama and Joe Biden are elected next week. And after the inauguration, we'll really see how far America has come.

And if, somehow, Obama does NOT win, then the entire world will know just how fucked up this country is. I need to find the editorial from The Guardian that expresses that a little bit more eloquently than I just did....

NINE DAYS!!! [Oct. 26th, 2008|06:59 pm]
Just in case you guys were wondering, I'm voting for That One. I know, it's a huge, huge surprise. Because of certain obligations that I have on November 4, I won't be able to participate in other activities on November 5, but I will make it to Graciela and her mommy.

BTW, I totally stole this from queencallipygos and it's relevant to the preceding paragraph:

So that's out of the way, I'm sitting at home with Miriam (the wonderful little black kitty) staring at me (or my glass of Trois Pistoles) while The Boss (aka, my girlfriend) hosts her bookclub meeting in another room.

Now, for some reason, the ladies in her book club aren't keen on letting me join, despite the fact that I read a lot. OK, so I would be the only heterosexual male to be a member of the club, but I am pretty sure that is not the reason. I'm pretty sure the reason is that The Boss told them some of the titles that I might be tempted to recommend. But it's all good. By the way, tonight's book is "The Shack". I haven't read it, but I've heard that it's really good, if that's your thing.

But I'm not going to eavesdrop on the conversation and pass it on to you guys. That would be wrong of me.

So, to my knowledge, my team hasn't given up a try this season. Now, there was a match today at 11AM vs. the Georgia Rugby Union All-Stars, but I didn't play because of a prior commitment, so there is an outside chance that we were scored on today. So we'll see. All I know is that Chattanooga RFC didn't score on us yesterday when I was playing full back, and that I opened up our scoring with a wicked cool try. Just sayin', yo. Oh, and I should have had another. But let's not get greedy. One of my buddies broke his arm and is out six to eight weeks. I know the feeling. I've spent more time on the sidelines than on the field over the last two seasons, so I've learned a little humility on that front.

But this is starting to ramble on, so I'll leave it off there for now.

Take care of yourself, and each other.

So now you suckas better bow down! [Sep. 29th, 2008|08:09 pm]

Your result for The Who Would You Be in 1400 AD Test...

The Lord

You scored 32% Cardinal, 54% Monk, 35% Lady, and 51% Knight!

You are of the intellectual breed and yet you are also very interested in war. You are of the aristocracy and head the cavalry a safe distance from the carnage of the front lines. You believe in defeating your enemy with not only might, but also wit.

You scored high as both the Monk and the Knight. You can try again to get a more precise description of either the Monk or the Knight, or you can be happy that you're an individual.

Wow. 13 weeks. Long time, no talk. [May. 28th, 2008|08:52 pm]
Moved in with the girlfriend.

Still a bit injured.

Life is rather grand.

And yes, I do have other thoughts.

Last five books read have been:

Among the Thugs

The Pirate Republic

The Year of Living Biblically

American Fascists

Everything Bad is Good For You

So yeah, no fiction. That should change rather soon, as I need a release from somewhat deeper stuff and the rest of the world.

So yeah, I'll be back in a bit, I guess.
